Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs

We each have our beliefs. These may come from religion, society, our parents or our companions and peers. In many ways, our beliefs help determine who we are and how we live our life. They provide structure and support for us.

Yet, these beliefs can also limit our lives, they can become barriers that we need to overcome. Such beliefs are known as limiting beliefs.

The nature of limiting beliefs and their effect upon a person is central to the work of any coach. Overcoming such beliefs, replacing such beliefs or even just recognizing the beliefs, are all very much part of the coach’s work.

So it is with some pleasure that I reproduce here an article on how to break free from limiting beliefs.

Break Free From Limiting Beliefs

By Evelyn Lim

To have success breakthroughs, you need to break free from limiting beliefs. Limiting beliefs keep you stuck, preventing you from becoming the best that you can be. When you have limiting beliefs, you find yourself missing out on opportunities. Your options become fewer than what can be the case. You begin to wonder why all your peers are succeeding before you, when you are the one having all the brilliant ideas and academic intelligence.

The same thoughts that are played over and over again in your mind become beliefs. Those that are positive strengthen you but those that are negative, weaken you. Unfortunately, many of us grew up, having created a lot of negative thoughts. We were told repeatedly that we were “stupid”, “lousy” or “slow”. Gradually, we believed them to be true. Even when someone challenges them, you do not hesitate to stand by them.

“People can, and do believe all kinds of utterly idiotic thoughts.” – Quote by L Michael Hall.

Examples of Limiting Beliefs

Here are some examples of limiting beliefs:

It is hard to reach the top.
Others can do it better than me.
I am just too slow to process.
I am hardly creative.
I do not deserve to be successful.

Consequences of Having Limiting Beliefs

Negative limiting beliefs can be a self fulfilling prophecy. When you were told that you were hopeless in a certain area at 5 years old, you may well come to the same conclusion yourself. You are bothered by the constant doubts in your mind. You decided that you did not have the flair or ability for your initial interest. What could possibly have been a nice dream to strive for got burnt up in smoke!

In your job, negative beliefs prevent you for producing your best work. In relationships, you are not able to experience satisfying external connections because you are not having a good one with yourself in the first place. Your physical body can also suffer from having toxic thoughts – thoughts that are flawed, distorted or steeped in unhelpful ways.

Beliefs Are Just Thoughts

Would it be possible to change beliefs that have been so ingrained in you? Yes. Because, really, beliefs are made up of thoughts. If you can change the thoughts, you can change your beliefs. As you start to break them down, you can see that many of them are not representative of the current reality. You are able to experience a shift in your thinking immediately.

It is also likely the case that the longer you have them, the greater its effect on you. So a look into negative beliefs often warrants you to look into your childhood to investigate for root causes.

In conclusion, break free from limiting beliefs by examining your mind. As you become increasingly aware of the thoughts you are having, you are already one step to knowing what to change them to. Acknowledge that your negative thoughts may have served you in the past but that you are now ready to let them go. This very process amazingly dissolves your negative thoughts right away. Confidence in yourself becomes boosted. Success will not be too far away!
