How to Get What I Need

I have been thinking recently about how people can get what they need. There would appear to be many different ways of getting what you need, some ways would seem better than others, some ways would seem more ethical or legal than others. The question remains, which is the best way to get what you need?

Write down what you need. I think we need to start with this asthe first step. That is to actually define what you need. Many people have a vague idea of what they think they need but there is definite value in writing down what you need and actually putting it into words.

Distinguish what you need from what you want. This is another important step. there are clearly things that we ‘need’ such as water, food, affection. Then there are those things we ‘want’ such as fast cars, well paid job. Many of the things we think we ‘need’ may in fact only be things we ‘want’, we can live without a fast car but maybe we couldn’t do our job without a car at all.

Prioritise your needs and your wants. Prioritising is important though not always easy. When it comes to prioritising our needs and wants, I’d suggest placing our ‘needs’ first at the top of any list. Once we have done that and we feel that our needs are being met, then we can start to prioritise our ‘wants’.

Don’t ignore your wants. I have talked about ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ with the suggestion that ‘needs’ are more important. That does not mean that you should neglect your wants. Our needs give us the basics for life and survival, our wants are what make us strive for improvement in our selves or our lives. Your wants are important.

Tell other people what you want. Okay, so you’ve written down what you want and you’ve prioritised them. Now go tell other people. Let other people know what you want (and maybe why you want it), you may just find that they have the ability to give you what you want or they may know someone who knows someone who lives next door to someone who is giving away what you want. By telling other people what you want, you are networking and spreading news of your wants. In doing this, you are increasing your chances of getting what you want.

Be prepared to help others get what they want. If you are in a position to help someone else get what they want or what they need, then let them know. Or maybe perform some random act of kindness to help them get what they want. I think the secret here is not to give it to them, unless they ask. Let them obtain what they want but also let them know that you may be in a position to help them.

Be grateful. Whenever you get what you want or when you get help to get nearer what you want, be grateful. Thank the person(s) who help you along the way. Be thankful and acknowledge the opportunities or moments of luck that may come along to help.

So whatever it is that you want, I hope this little article helps you. Remember, it is not always wrong to put yourself first

Thank you for reading.
