Among my clients, there is currently a definite interest in downshifting, down-sizing, decluttering or a longing for a simpler life.
In this post, I present just 10 reasons why you may want to consider downshifting.
- You feel your work life balance is wrong. Too much emphasis upon work or you find you have to spend so much time at work in order to pay bills and live your current lifestyle.
- You feel you do not have control of your life. You feel that the demands of others (boss, employer, relatives…) is more in control of your life than you are.
- You are facing job loss, redundancy or uncertainty in your career. You may see this as an opportunity to do something you really want to do. Maybe it is an opportunity to work for yourself or to work in a job that matches your own personal core values.
- You want to achieve your full potential or realise a dream. Maybe you feel that time is running out and now may the the last opportunity to get if you are to fulfil your dream.
- You are fed up with city living. You yearn to move into the country, get back to nature, explore communal living. Above all you want to move away from the busy, noisy city life.
- You want to start your own business. You see now as an opportunity to become more independent and work at your own business.
- You want to move or work somewhere else. Maybe in a foreign country, maybe you even have a desire to travel and visit foreign places and meet new people in different cultures.
- Life is passing you by. Every day your work or your current lifestyle is making more and more demands upon you, your time and your energy. You feel that ‘life’ is just passing you by and you want to stop and take the time to enjoy life.
- You want to live a simpler existence. You feel that the age of consumerism is not for you, the effort to keep up with or ahead of your neighbors is simply not worthwhile.
- Your life lacks direction. You want to get off the current carousel of living that just seems to go round and round yet gets nowhere. You have a direction or vision that you want to follow.
Downshifting or simplifying your life may sound idealistic, it may sound easy, it may also sound daunting. Don’t let idealistic visions fool you, it is not always easy to downshift your life.
