The concept of limiting beliefs are central to life coaching.  Your limiting beliefs are what hold you back or stop you from reaching your goals. They are things you believe to be true even if they are not true. Any successful person has to recognize and overcome their own limiting beliefs. Any coach, be they a life coach or a sports coach, has to recognise the limiting beliefs in their client and then help the client overcome those limiting beliefs.

For me, there are six aspects of limiting beliefs that are important to remember and important to help a client understand;

  • Everyone has limiting beliefs. This is true, though we may not all recognise our limiting beliefs. Indeed many of us may not want to admit or face up to or limiting beliefs. In our mind, our limiting beliefs are an indication of our own weakness or the cause of or failures. There is, though, no need to feel guilty about your limiting beliefs. Indeed, it is a positive step to admit to having them and to be ready to recognise them, overcome them and remove the negative effect they have on your life.
  • We are held back by our limiting beliefs. If you want to achieve or be successful in life or any particular field. Then you have to ensure that your beliefs do not hold you back. No matter how worthy your goals are, no matter how much you desire your goal, your limiting belief is likely to hold you back unless you learn to recognise, overcome or change it.
  • Recognising your limiting beliefs is not always easy. Sometimes people can easily see their limiting belief but cannot always get rid of it. More often, though, you may not know what is holding you back, what is stopping you from doing what you know you really wish you could do. Sometimes this just manifests itself as a fear or anxiety. Often a limiting belief is hidden or affects your life withot you realising it.
  • You can overcome your limiting beliefs. This is important to know, your limiting beliefs are not fixed in stone. With help, support and guidance, a person can overcome their limiting beliefs.
  • You can change your limiting beliefs. This is not quite the same as overcoming your limiting beliefs, it is a step further on. Overcoming your limiting beliefs is a step toward success but, at this stage, your limiting belief is still there. You have overcome it at this stage but it may return to trip you up or block you on another occassion. By working to change your beliefs, by turning negative beliefs into positive ones, or by turning limiting beliefs into enabling ones, you can move forward and give yourself new strength to work toward your goals.
  • It is possible to live without limiting beliefs. This may be the ultimate for many people … to live without being held back by limiting beliefs. The good news for us all is that this is possible.

The links I have included in this post are to other peoples’ posts or articles on aspects of limiting beliefs and their effects. They are all well worth reading so do please browse them and gain for yourself a better insight into the nature and effect of limiting beliefs.

If you have any thoughts about limiting beliefs, I’d be glad to hear them.
