3 Statements That Block Us From Life Purpose
By Kevin
Doherty
"I'm working on it."
"I want to change, it's just that I don't know how."
"I'm trying really hard to improve my life."
If you're like most people, chances are you catch yourself saying
things like this on occasion. What do these statements actually
suggest? Most likely, that there is nothing moving-- one is staying
stuck right where they are.
I have always found it to be ironic that when I tell a patient
that they need to spend more time doing nothing, simply relaxing,
and watching their minds, that their first response is, "I'm working
on it." You see, 'working on it' is the problem. When we perpetually
work on ourselves, nothing happens. We stay stuck. We have to be
willing to let go of working on it. Instead, just do it. Working on
it means that we will always feel incomplete, stuck in an eternal
cycle of trying to feel better.
Pay close attention to the actual motivation someone has when
they say they will work on it. You can almost feel a kind of
resigned quality that suggests, 'Well, I've tried before and nothing
happened, but I guess I can try again (even though I'm pretty sure
nothing will happen). From an ultimate perspective, there is really
nothing to work on. That is always an important reality to keep in
mind.
Another common one is, "I don't know how." Once again, the same
principle applies. When it comes to personal evolution, the question
isn't how, but why? Why should I? When the why is clear enough, the
how falls into place.
Lastly, when it comes to experiencing some kind of inner peace or
aligning with our life's purpose, 'trying really hard' typically
does not really help. Trying really hard often suggest a quality of
force or will power behind our actions. It can actually be a
powerful obstacle to our deeper purpose. Instead, forget about
trying really hard. Just surrender. Let yourself be lazy if that is
what comes up in your mind.
Take a moment to consider the statements you use to assure
yourself that you're doing your part, fulfilling your obligations,
or trying to be a really good person who is doing all the right
things. There is nothing at all wrong with being a good person. What
we are talking about here is whether or not you are actually
free in your life, internally and externally. Freedom is a
radical departure from the voice of 'should' or 'I have to' that so
much of our modern world forces upon us. It is about living life on
your own terms in a way that is based on an elevated state of
awareness.
